What is Wildlife Rehabilitation?

Wildlife Rehabilitation is the legal process of caring for injured and orphaned wildlife with the primary goal of eventual release back into the wild.  This process is carried out by trained and licensed persons that donate their time and money to fulfill these goals.

A Brief History

Wild Spirit was formed in 1995 from a desire to create an organization that would rehabilitate injured and orphaned wildlife free of charge to the public.  The unique part about Wild Spirit is its use of natural methods to treat the patients that come into the facility.  In early 1997 we received our not-for-profit status and began to accept membership shortly thereafter.  Also in 1997 we began to develop our educational programs, for we felt that environmental education was to be an essential part of Wild Spirit.

Wild Spirit Today

Today, Wild Spirit is dedicated to enhancing  our quality of life by preserving the natural world around us.  We reach for this goal through wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education.

Wild Spirit's rehabilitation efforts have been greatly enhanced through the use of natural methods of healing.  Our state and federally licensed rehabilitators are constantly updating their skills in both conventional and holistic healing so that the wildlife can get the best treatment possible.  We feel that the best way to treat nature is through natural means, and thus we have incorporated homeopathy, herbal remedies, and other holistic methods into our rehabilitation efforts.

Wild Spirit's educational outreach programs are designed to teach through interaction.  We use many hands on activities to make the learning experience more memorable and enjoyable.  Our programs are designed for all age groups and learning levels.

Our organization also plays an active environmental role in our community.  We are involved in the New York State Adopt-A-Highway program, and have initiated a community habitat program.  We will be creating wildlife habitats at community sites including nursing homes, parks, and schools.

How We Are Funded

Wild Spirit receives no federal funding and relies solely on private donations and memberships.  It is costly to feed, house, and medically treat the variety of species that are in need of our services each year.  Wild Spirit is run by a dedicated group of volunteers that donate their time to our facility.  As our organization grows, we hope that you will join our efforts through volunteerism or membership

Feel free to drop us an email if you have any questions about Wild Spirit or Wildlife Rehabilitation.
